Hair trends of 2019 – Perspectives of top salon stylists  and experts

2018 was the year of experimental shades and “baby bangs”. It was the year of the buzz cut cruising the red carpet. With individual expressions on the boom, 2019 looks to be another year of fun explorations into the realm of the self according to the predictions of hair experts.

  1. Blunt bobs

A revival of the 70s bobs fueled by popular celebrities like Kendall Jenner and Karlie Kloss, the short hair is expected to go a long way as the standout hairstyle for 2019. Influential hairstylist and Ghd ambassador, Zoe Irwin, noted this shift. “I think we will see a move away from shattered and layered hair towards a blunter, sharper finish”, said Zoe. “I envisage it being a shift away from the mid-length boyfriend bob, which was so popular last season, to something more precise and above the shoulder, roughly halfway between your ears and the nape of the neck.”

Zoe continues that the blunt cut is very versatile in focusing and flattering the face while giving the stylist an ability to either thicken thin hair or soften already thick hair. In fact, done correctly, “it will do wonders for your bone structure and is often the gateway to an even shorter ‘do.” However before you ride the blunt bob train, talk to your hair stylist on how to adapt it to your needs.

  1. Grey Hair

Aging is in. Age-inclusivity is flourishing in the beauty industry, whether it’s dyeing the hair a fashion-forward silver or embracing the already natural grey hair. Interest in going grey has ballooned in Pinterest by over 850 percent. Redken’s global creative colour director Josh Wood explains how to manage the flood of grey in 2019.

“Work with a colourist to try to get the hairline as light as your natural grey. If the eye sees the lightest colour against the face it will give the appearance of being totally grey.” The key Wood notes is to then using a glossing service like the DIA Richesse service at L’Oréal Professionnel salons nationwide, to subtly decrease any patchiness.

Wood also suggests to cut your hair shorter to expose “more of the natural color and grey”.

  1. Super-Straight

Love it or loathe it, the polka-straight hair of the early 90s is backaccording to Frankie Moody, senior hairstylist at Jo Hansford Salon.

“Curls and waves are out” says Frankie, “so make sure your straighteners are up to the challenge”. Bazaar recommends Ghd’s Original Styler (but we also recommend embracing your natural texture and go with “your” straight flow!).

  1. Adult Accessories

Hair accessories have stolen the limelight recently owing to extreme heat of the summer months. From the humble hair clip to more statement bows and ribbons, hair accessories and their sophisticated versions will only grow in popularity predicts Irwin.

As people start wearing their hair up, Irwin believes the versatility of accessories will be key in 2019 noting that “the accessories differ in shape and style, they all can be adapted to a multitude of looks.” She recommends Syd Hayes’ high-fashion pins and Ashley Williamson’s diamante clips.

Seeing as though the biggest hair trends for this year include a variety of different styles, it’s safe to say there is pretty much a style suitable for anyone. So go ahead and make your appointment with your stylist now to get ready to give your mane (and yourself) a reset in 2019.
